Here in Ireland, going underground isn’t a trend yet. But if prices keep going up, owners might well see the advantages of digging down in site-restricted terraces to get that vital extra square footage.

In the case of No 36, the underground space runs wholly under the back garden, which also cut the cost of digging out under the existing house. It’s a concept that could well catch on.

The McCullagh’s underground apartment, which spans almost 500 sq ft (ca. 46 m²), came into being “by accident” after they bought the then rundown 1904-built terrace in 2004.

The additional space provided by the huge basement, along with the end-of-garden garage (for storage and parking) brings the covered floor space at this house up to almost 3,000 sq ft (ca. 279 m²).
